Australian Bush Flower Essences and Digestion

The Australian Bush Flower Essences are a powerful tool that act as catalysts to help resolve negative beliefs and develop intuitive abilities. They help to bring a person to a state of emotional, spiritual and mental harmony. The rationale behind their healing is based on the timeless wisdom expressed by so many of the great healers from antiquity to modern time - that when emotional balance is restored, true healing occurs. Most physical illness is the manifestation of emotional imbalance. The Bush Essences have extraordinary healing powers and produce a marked and quickly noticeable effect of the physical being. There are 62 Bush Essences, coming from plants found all over Australia. One of the great advantages of the Bush Essences is that they are totally safe and without side effects. They continue the tradition of healing through the use of flowers, spanning thousands of years and many cultures including Aboriginal, Egyptian, Malay, African and European.

In my practice, I see a lot of people with digestive problems and one of the most common and also easily corrected, is halitosis or bad breath. Rarely does the problem originate in the mouth, but mostly from poor digestion. The following Essences usually address the problem - Black-eyed Susan, for people always on the go, usually rushing, doing lots of tasks and experiencing difficulty in delegating because they feel they can do better than anyone else anyway! If they actually stop to sit down and eat, their minds are often still focusing on their current and future projects. They don't allow the quiet time to relax and let their digestive juices flow to break down their food. If the Black-eyed Susan type is late, and often they are, they "grab" and gulp down fast food, the high fat content of which needs extra digestion. Often the combination of food is poor as they are seeking a short term fullness. So, the food often ferments as the enzymes are not present to digest effectively. Such fermentation, which comes out as bad breath, can also arise if an individual is very stressed and overwhelmed by their work or  emotional life. They eat when they are upset. In all of the above examples, the nervous system is dealing with the stress and is sending the blood to the muscles and away from the stomach, where it is needed for good digestion. Even when this scenario happens only occasionally, it can affect our breath, let alone when it is happening regularly. The Black-eyed Susan helps this personality to slow down, to find their own quiet center, to re-evaluate their lifestyle and priorities, to be more "in the moment" and also to be able to say "no" to requests or demands on their time. Many realize that they can be equally or more effective and efficient by balancing their business with some still, reflective time, to give their intuition a chance to come through and guide them.

Paw Paw is wonderful for helping one cope with overload and the feeling that one cannot cope with the amount or intensity of one's lot. Paw Paw, as a fruit, contains the protein digestive enzyme Papain and helps most types of digestive problems. As an Essence, it helps to assimilate and integrate ideas, information and situations. I often combine it with Crowea, which is for worry. I have noticed how retrenchment, combined with high financial overheads, has really hit many in the stomach - even for those who haven't lost their jobs but are still worrying about that occurring. Sometimes the bad breath stems from worry being so intense that it inhibits getting on with life, planning ahead or making decisions. The Paw Paw/Crowea combination works very quickly in resolving this.

Peach-Flowered Tea Tree is the most effective Essence for treating Candida. This condition, along with associated sugar cravings, also contributes to halitosis. The tell-tale signs for Candida are dark circles under the eyes, constant clearing of the throat, itchy anal and genital area and increased burping and flatulence. With these patients the quickest and most effective treatment is to give the Peach-Flowered Tea Tree, avoid the obvious yeasty foods, e.g., vegemite, mushrooms, etc., and give acidophilus and bifidus along with Green Essence (the latter clears yeast and parasites from the body). The Peach-Flowered Tea Tree regulates the pancreas and blood sugar levels. Louise Hay believes halitosis stems from rotten attitudes, vile gossip and foul thinking. Personally, I have not found these to be a major factor with my patients with bad breath except in the case of gum boils. In these cases, Mountain Devil and Dagger Hakea are the Essences to use. Occasionally, other gum problems, such as receding and infected gum, cause halitosis and often I find this happening when people are indecisive and apathetic about life.  Jacaranda and Kapok Bush respectively have brought about some quick changes, both with the disposition and the gums.

If anyone has had bad breath for a long period of time then might I suggest Kangaroo Paw Essence - to make them more aware of, and sensitive to, the needs of others.

Constant rushing, worry and stress can also lead to peptic ulceration. Good digestion starts in the mouth with chewing. The more we chew, the more saliva we secrete which is essential to healthy digestion. Saliva contains important enzymes that break down carbohydrates and it is highly alkaline. Our highly acid stomachs need the alkalinity of our saliva and saliva treated food to protect the stomach from excess acid that would otherwise give rise to ulcers. If we don't adequately chew our food, the acid stomach environment has no alkaline buffer to balance it. These acids can break down the stomach lining. Crowea in particular helps to regulate the acid/alkaline balance in the stomach.

If our conscious capacity to feel is diminished, then this function is taken over by the stomach. So it has to not only digest food but also feelings. Crowea's affinity to the stomach can be seen again from the fact that it helps one to be aware of what they are feeling. I notice that a lot of my patients with stomach problems don't have any fives in their birthdate. In numerology, five is the center of the emotional plane. No number five in your chart indicates a potential difficulty in not knowing what it is you are feeling.

There is a yin and yang aspect of the stomach, the former being the ability to surrender and receive what is to be digested, Black-eyed Susan helps bring about the calm, relaxed yin state. The yang aspect is the stomach acid and is very corrosive and aggressive. If annoyances, frustrations and conflicts are not dealt with and resolved, then it tends to be internalized thus "swallowing our anger" and incorporating it into our stomach acid. The stomach then produces more gastric acid, on a physical level, in an effort to digest and resolve the non-physical, emotional feelings. Many people I treat for ulcers don't have the ability to resolve and come to terms with their conflicts and aggression. They can often end up as people pleasers - always giving to others so as to avoid conflict. Philotheca is very useful for this type of person, and it also helps them to appreciate themselves more, to give to themselves rather than always to others.

Mountain Devil may be taken if they react the other way to conflict, and explode violently, and frequently. Crowea also helps people to stay calm and centered, not to over-react and, as I said, helps people who worry. Ninety percent of what we worry about either does not happen or is out of our control anyway. This can also lead us to an unresolved position. The stomach's reaction to this lack of yang, i.e., lack of action to bring about resolution, is to produce extra acid.

So, the pattern to internalize our feelings and aggression leads eventually to gastric ulceration where it is not food that is digested but the stomach wall itself, hence the expression "s/he's eating her/himself with worry."  Two men I treated who had had vagotomies (surgery that severs the specific nerve-stems responsible for acid production) took longer to achieve emotional wellbeing than with most of my other patients, though both did achieve this state with Crowea. With the vagotomies, the medical interventional approach attempts, through the severing of the nerves, to break the link between feelings and the stomach. The stomach is processing food only, not feelings as well. The stomach is being protected from external stimuli. Alternatively, the diet medically recommended is a totally bland, innocuous diet, usually pureed. So when there is too much information, stress or experiences to deal with (Paw Paw) and an ulcer eventuates, then the food too has to be free of nearly everything, i.e., no raw, spicy, hot, etc., food for the stomach to cope.

Poor digestion is a widespread problem in our community. It lessens the quality of our lives through lack of energy and drive, various aches and pains to name but a few. The various emotional reasons that can result in defective digestion can be effectively resolved using the Bush Essences briefly outlined in this article together with correct nutrition and exercise.
